7 Quick Takes Friday (Take 29)

1. I really want to make a fall decoration for our front door, something other than a wreath.  When I was a small child, my grandmother told me that “in her day” a wreath on the door signified that someone in the home had passed away.  I think wreaths are lovely, especially all the beautiful ones I’ve seen on Pinterest, but I just can’t bring myself to put one on my own door because of what my grandma told me.  Any other fall decoration ideas?

2. The North Carolina State Fair started today.  David and I are looking forward to going sometime this weekend.  From the news coverage, it seems like we should be looking forward to deep fried brownies and cupcakes that look like hot dogs.  I don’t think we’ll be trying either of those.

3. I came across this article by the Pew Center about declining births in the US corresponding with the downturn in the economy.  While it makes sense that people are putting off having children (or having fewer children) because of difficult financial situations, that’s certainly not the case with the people I know, I can’t even count the number of family and friends we know that had babies this year or who are currently pregnant.

4. Do you send Halloween cards? What about Thanksgiving cards?  Most of the people I know of my generation don’t even send Christmas cards, but I love sending out mail.  My mom always sends out cards for all holidays, never misses a birth, anniversary or another occasion to send out a card.  I started sending out cards of my own as soon as I moved out of the house for college.  I love getting mail and I hope that other people feel that same way when they receive my cards.

5. I only have a little over 6 weeks until my due date!  We have almost everything we need and I’ve washed all the baby clothes.  But I still haven’t really started on my before baby goals.  I’m a procrastinator by nature and up until this past week, it felt like I had an eternity before the baby would be here.  Guess I better get started…

6. David is preparing for the baby by reading The Birth Partner I am so grateful that I have a husband who is wanting to participate fully in the birth of our child (even catch the baby!).  I know that not all men feel comfortable even being in the labor room, and I want to remember not to take my husband’s enthusiasm for granted.

7. One thing we do still need to get is a rocking chair.  I want a real rocking chair, I’m not very fond of gliders, but it seems that classic rocking chairs aren’t as easy to find as they once were.  I thought I might be able to find one on Craig’s List but I haven't come across any that would work yet.  I am going to start looking around at thrift stores before I break down and order one online.

  1. Ok, I have to say...I wasn't in favor of it at first, but someone once told me, "You are going to spend a crazy amount of time in that rocking chair...it better be a wide and comfy one."

Seeing as with our first I was scared to co-sleep.. I didn't mind sleeping in that chair with him :) The second baby...well, all rules went out the window with him!

In my opinion (even though you didn't ask for it...sorry!), whatever you choose...just choose one you loooove and has plenty of breastfeeding room, if you know what I'm sayin'. Oh! And one that you can catch a nap or two in between feeding and snuggling. That's always nice too :)

But then again, that was just me and my crazy sleeping habits... Whatever works, right?

    4. I just sent out Halloween cards too! I love sending mail and getting mail so we always find an excuse to mail stuff!

    7. Good luck on the rocking chair hunt!

  6. #7 - Don't get a real rocking chair. I was just like you, I wanted the real, beautiful wooden rocking chair. When my mother in law offered to get me a nursing chair - and a lazboy at that, I declined and went with the wooden rocking chair. I've regretted that decision so many times, lol, because I can't afford a lazboy (but have since gotten a handmedown one that I use for nursing). I don't even like the gliders (also got a handmedown). While nursing, you really need comfy, smushy sides, so baby doesn't bump head. You also need to be able to recline. And rock. Lazboy is the way to go, in my opinion. You can always find a nice wooden rocker for the front porch (or any room) later, but I would not get one just for nursing, because I cannot nurse in that wooden rocker. =(

  7. Good luck with finding a rocking chair! My parents have one at home which I love, and judging from the amount of baby pictures taken in that chair, I'm guessing they did too. ^_^

  8. This is my first time here - from Conversion Diary. What a pretty bride you are!
Enjoy these last 6 weeks! I had a glider for the first baby and a wooden rocking chair for the 2nd. Both worked nicely.

I have a Sign that says "Welcome" on my door in fall colors with three scarecrows (stuffed, 3-D) peeking over the top. I think I got it at Big Lots!

  9. Glad to hear that other people send out cards, I rarely get any so it seemed like it was a dying tradition!

Elisa, while I really like the look of a traditional rocking chair, we also have space reasons why that's really the only option for us right now. We live in a small apartment and it's going to be hard to find room for even a rocking chair in the baby's room. Even gliders take up more space than a rocker. I will be getting comfy cushions though! And maybe down the road for a later baby, we'll get something a little bigger!

Jame, Emily, and Katie, thanks for the decoration ideas. We have a little scarecrow decoration on the door right now (my grandma gave it to me some years ago) but it's a little small so it looks a little goofy on a big door. A nice fall welcome sign might be good to add to it.

  10. We have 1 rocking chair and 1 glider and the cats sleep in them more than we do!
