7 Quick Takes Friday (Take 50)

--- 1 ---

I feel like almost every week, I start my Quick Takes with prayer requests for friends and family members with health problems.  This week is no different.  I posted a prayer request yesterday.  In short, would you pray for my mom because her doctor thinks her thyroid cancer has returned and spread to her lymph nodes?  If you want to read more about her situation, you can here.

As you’re reading this, I’m in Atlanta.  Lucia and I flew out yesterday to be with my best friend who is having surgery today.  It’s only a minor outpatient surgery, but she’s just moved here in the fall for grad school and I didn’t want her to be without someone to care for her if she needs it.  She should be feeling better in a few days and is planning to take me and Lucia to some places around the city.

--- 3 ---

My best friend and I met in high school, although we were only friendly acquaintances at the time.  We became very close while on a trip to Europe right after high school graduation.  She moved out of state for college a few months later and we’ve never lived in the same place since, except for a few summers during college when she’s stayed with her parents.  In fact, since I moved to North Carolina and she moved to Georgia last summer, this is the first time we’ve even lived in the same time zone (which makes phone calls much more convenient).  I don’t get to see her very often, and when I do, it’s usually not for very long, so I’m really looking forward to spending time with her.

We think Lucia is starting to teethe.  She’s been much more irritable lately and especially difficult to put to sleep.  She’s been putting her fingers in her mouth every chance she gets and is drooling like a faucet.  It didn’t even occur to me that she could be teething this early, but David picked up on the signs (even though he’s never been around a teething or read any baby books about it).  We looked in the baby books and it sure seems like that’s what is going on.  I was hoping we’d have a few more months before we had to worry about that.

Baby Teething Toys: Baby Handmade Sophie The Giraffe TeetherOn that note, what are your favorite products, tips, and tricks for a teething baby?  It seems like there are so many teethers out there (and many seem ridiculously expensive) that I just don’t know where to start.  (I love the Sophie The Giraffe Teether - any thoughts on it?  Is it worth the price?)  She only just turned three months so she is too young for many of the tricks I’ve read involving food (like frozen fruits in those mesh bags).

--- 6 ---

I read this interesting article about "How Some Kids with a Van are Changing the Pro-Life Movement".  I think this was a really beautiful idea and that it should be more widely spread.  Any ideas of how we do this?

I read this blog post from Andrea at Running with Perseverance the other day and just had to pass it on.  I love being a stay-at-home wife and mother, it’s what I’ve always wanted, but sometimes I struggle telling other people what I do.  What I do isn’t valued highly by our society and sometimes I get caught up in that.  Andrea said exactly what I needed to hear, exactly when I needed to hear it.  I may not do anything noteworthy by the world’s standards, but just try to say that what I do doesn’t mean the world to this little girl:

  1. Don't worry about asking for prayer.  We're a community here and prayer for each other should be a priority.

  2. You definitely have my prayers. Honestly, I appreciate that you write it often, because I generally pray right when I see it and then, admittedly, life is crazy and I forget. So every time I see you post it, it's a reminder to me to send up a prayer for your mom and friend.

Sophie looks cute and a couple of my friends have them for their babies, but my (not yet a mother lol) two cents is that it's that price because it's trendy. I'm betting you could go to Target or Babies R Us and find an inexpensive, bpa free teether.

  3. I am certainly praying for your mother and friend. I hope your other friend has a speedy recovery and you can enjoy time in Atlanta!

  4. Teething can start early.  My son had all the symptoms of teething off and on from 4-10 months before teeth actually popped through.   You can put a slightly wet wash cloth in the freezer for a bit for her to chew on. That might bring some relief.

  5. Oh my goodness, I'm so humbled that you would link to my post.  It's so true though, what you do really does mean the world that that precious girl of yours!  :-)
We have Sophie!  So far, she's only entertained my older girls to get the dog riled up, but I imagine Joe will like it soon enough.  The reviews on Amazon convinced me, but I had a gift card and didn't need any more baby stuff!  haha
Some other things for teething - Hylands Teething Tablets.  I can not even begin to tell you how wonderful these have been for my family.  They were off the shelf for a few months (big pharm does NOT like homeopathic!), and I guarded my remaining half-bottle like gold.
I've heard that those Baltic amber teething necklaces are really helpful too.  I've never used one, but my favorite CD shop is about to start stocking them and I think I'm going to pick one up for Joe. http://www.abbyslane.com/Natural-Baltic-Amber-Teething-Necklaces_p_541.html

  6. I will be praying for your friend and mom. Hope you have a safe trip.

Wow I had no ideas babies could start teething that young also! But I know nothing about babies..

If you have time/money you should totally check out the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta. We went there several years ago when we drove through and it was pretty interesting.

  7. Of course I will pray for your intentions.

Also, I will tell you that what you do is so valuable.  Judge your call by your heart and the Spirit working in you, not by society's silliness.

  8. Rebecca started teething at four months, and it was ugly until I figured out that was what was going on. I would put three bibs on her, one on top of the other, to try to keep her clothes dry. Be sure to check her neck often to make sure she is not getting a rash. My friends all swear by Sophie. I used a wet washcloth in the freezer often. But honestly, she will probably finder own things to gnaw on and bring relief. Rebecca liked board books and wooden blocks. Hang in there. When they start popping through it is really cool.

  9. So sorry to hear about your Mom. You will certainly have my prayers.

So nice of you to fly out to take care of your friend. I'm sure she appreciates it more than you know. Have fun!

  10. I am definitely going to be using a wet washcloth in the freezer! Thanks for the idea!

  11. We didn't make it to the Coca Cola museum, but my best friend will be there for another 4 years at least, so I'm sure I'll make another trip and get the chance to see it!

  12. No, thank you for writing the post! Thanks for the tips...I will definitely be checking out the teething tablets. I just saw a baby wearing a teething necklace for the first time the other day and now that you've confirmed they work, I'll have to get those too!

  13. I gave my husband a daddy book (this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Be-Prepared-Practical-Handbook-Dads/dp/0743251547/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331736045&sr=8-1) , and he liked it so much that I've been reading it.  I was reading a section about teething yesterday, and they had some homemade ideas.  One was to use a clean sock and put crushed ice in it and then tie it off and let her chew on that.  (It's basically the same idea as the mesh feeders.)  We haven't had to conquer that yet, but let us know what works for you!

  14. My daughter had her first tooth at 5 months old so she would have shown teething signs very young as well. She also started losing her baby teeth alot sooner than her peers.
