I love joining Table for More and Life After... each week for their link up, Wedded Bliss Wednesdays. Two weeks ago, I introduced you to my husband, last week I told you how we do date nights, and this week I'm sharing my best marriage advice. A few months ago, I offered some advice for newlyweds, but marriage is a constant learning experience, so I'm sure my advice is a bit different now. (I purposely didn't read that post so it couldn't influence my answers.)
If you could give one piece of advice to any married (or soon-to-be married) couple, what would it be? Focus on the big picture. There will be plenty of difficult moments or days, but don't judge your marriage by those brief periods of time. If I really try, I can think of specific arguments and hurtful moments over the past two years. But when I think of our marriage in general, I think of the incredible blessings it has been. When you experience those hard times, take a deep breath, think of our marriage as a whole, and know that once the difficulty passes, you'll get back to the beauty of your marriage.
What is an absolute MUST for any marriage/relationship? Selflessness. When you get married, you make the decision to put your own personal desires on the backburner for that of your family. (And yes, a husband and wife without children are a family).
What is the #1 no-no in a marriage? Airing your dirty laundry. It's not appropriate to talk negatively about your spouse or spread the intimate details about your marriage. It's hurtful and if you aren't your spouse's biggest supporter, who is?
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from your marriage? Marriage is so much harder than it seemed as a single woman but the rewards are much greater too. Joy is magnified when you have someone with which to share it, and sorrows are cut in half. A married couple forms a bond that I never could have imagined was possible to two people without the bond of blood. Also a huge surprise: that I could be best friends with a boy :)
