Cutting Edge Stencils Review & Giveaway

Rabat Allover stencil - my dream room!
I was recently given the opportunity to try out a few stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils.  Cutting Edge Stencils specializes in wall painting stencils; however, since I live in an apartment, I opted to try their craft stencils.  I ordered the Nagoya stencil in medium and the Rabat stencil in small.  I was very excited to see an additional bird and fleur-de-lis stencil included in my box.

Cutting Edge Stencils has a huge variety of stencils, including interlocking patterns and non-interlocking designs (like trees, flowers, and whimsical designs).  I fell in love with the interlocking designs, yet the site clearly warns that these stencils are more difficult and time consuming to use.  I ordered them anyway, since I would be using them on a smaller, craft scale; however, I would want a lot of practice using them before I were to tackle a wall.  I dream of having a gorgeous patterned accent wall someday and I would go back to Cutting Edge Stencils to order my stencils when the day comes.

for Lu's room - don't look too closely!
I was very pleased with the stencils I received.  They are great quality and I can see myself reusing the same stencils in various craft projects for years to come.  I was also very happy with all the stenciling advice and information on the website (Cutting Edge Stencils even has it's own YouTube page with how-to videos). My only complaint is that even the small stencil isn't small enough for many craft projects.  I'm not referring to the size of the pattern, but the overall size of the stencil - it can not easily wrap around items, the excess size makes it unwieldy.  For example, I bought a few candle holders and was hoping to stencil around them with the Rabat stencil, however, the stencil was just too long and I couldn't find a way to make it work without cutting the stencil down.  Therefore, if you had a specific craft you planned to use this for, you need to keep the size in mind or be prepared to cut the stencil (which I didn't want to do so I could use it in the future).

I have made a few item with the stencils so far and I was moderately pleased with how they turned out.  The issues I had were not the fault of the stencils, but user error as I learned or the first time how to craft with stencils.  I used Martha Stewart Repositionable Stencil Adhesive but still couldn't seem to get the stencil on tight enough to keep the paint from running outside the stencil a bit.  If you've stenciled before, I'd love to hear your suggestions of how to keep the paint in the stencil!

  4. I haven't done a lot of stenciling myself, but my mom was very successful (with crisp lines) by using a foam brush and dabbing very small amounts of paint a little at a time (always using an up and down motion with the brush vs. a side to side motion)
